McCain Immigration - Condensed

  • border security is the first priority
  • voted for 700-mile fence on Mexican border
  • For illegals already in country, a path towards legalization: learn English, pay fines
  • co-sponsored & voted yes on Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006 -would have created a guest worker program addressed border security issues. The Act did not pass Congress.
  • In 2007, co-sponsored a bill that would give illegal immigrants in-state tuition for higher education & allow the head of homeland security to give some students legal resident status.
  • believes U.S. should support Mexico and other Latin American countries and help them build strong economies so their citizens are not driven to come to America illegally.
