Re: NCLB who profits

Thanks for the website on who profits from NLCB. All I can say is Wow! It’s one of the questions I never would of asked? Who profits from NCLB? The president’s own brother. While they are getting rich this country just seems to be going down in education. No wonder we are not getting ahead in education. People are coming up with programs on how to enhance learning, without any qualifications, just to make a profit. Neal Bush, the president’s brother did just that. In another story it said that he also made some profit in some saving and loans thing. I guess nepotism does have some rewards. Now it just seems to me that ethics do not matter anymore. It’s just about the money. I should have of asked this question from the beginning since we do live in a capitalist society. All I can say is Bush has less than one year left in office. He just took this country down to the ground. The Euro is worth more than the dollar. The barrel of oil went up around 70 dollars since he has been in office, must be his ties with the Arabs. And who knows what else will happen in these coming months.

what I liked about blogging

I did not consider myself a political person. I just read parts of the newspaper and just read to see what was interesting. When it came to the elections I would just say to myself it’s just the same ol’ same ol’. When it came down to choosing a candidate and pick an issue I chose affirmative action. When I was surfing the net I came across something I never heard about the No Child Left Behind Act that I found very interesting.
It was how the Act gave the military authority to go into schools and view student files. They seek out the underachievers in schools and try to recruit from there. If the school refused to show military personnel finals they would be in danger of losing funds. This totally got my attention and decided to blog about to fit it in with the issue of affirmative action because as a sociology major we find out the poor are always targeted. And where do you think that the military will start recruiting from?? They recruit from the inner city schools where minorities tend to live. I find this unjust because schools in inner cities do not get well funded as other schools and get the left over. Since then I have been reading up on it more and questioning where the candidates really stand on the issues.

Re: hillary clinton on changing NCLB affirmative action

I saw the youtube video on what Hillary Clinton plans to do of changing the NCLB act. It sounds like a great idea to test students and see at what level they are at and then begin teaching children from there. Or funding schools so that classroom are able to go on field trips and learn from doing an outside activity.
I also read that Clinton would also make it available for people who seek a higher education to get grants if they serve two years national duty. After people serve they can apply for grants. I believe this is something like the GI bill.
The question I have is how are schools in low poverty cites going to get funded. Are all schools going to get equal amounts of money so that they can all have their equal share? Yes she wants to make changes but never have I heard her say or read that all schools are going to have an equal share. Schools in inner cities where minorities tend to live always get the scraps. Is she also going to make the states stop educational funding, as it seems the whole country has to face. Each state still has their budgets and decides how money is going to be spent.
And I never heard her mention about the military going in to public schools and seeking low achieving students. Is that going to stop?? She did not mention what she plans to do if students still underachieve. Should she not have a back up plan for that??
Barrack also is against NCLB and wants teachers to get paid more and they should but also he does not mention if the inner city schools will get there fair share.
Clinton and Barrack support affirmative action and both supported the NCLB act when Sen. Kennedy but all of the sudden they are against the act drew it. They knew and voted for the military to go into schools and seek out the underachievers. The military recruiters only seem to go to the inner schools where schools do not get a lot of funding and most social programs get cut. Recruiters will still target the poor and if the underachievers want to go to college they must serve for two years and they will eligible for grants. They must serve in a time when we are at war and who knows what the chances are that they will be killed in action. The government wins because if they are killed then this country does not have to give them grants and are rid of poor people.

Hillary Clinton on affirmative action

Hillary Clinton is a strong believer of education and that many students are entitled to higher education. She is also a strong supporter of the No child left behind act that was proposed by President Bush. The No child left behind act made schools accountable of teaching kids and making sure they get the right education so that they can have brighter futures.
Clinton is a supporter of affirmative action and believes that one day this country can be diverse and equal where no one is seen as different. Here is a quote she had made on a decision of affirmative action in Michigan:
“For millions of Americans, affirmative action has knocked down the barriers of the past that prevented them from attending college, law school, serving in the military, or working in our country's leading companies and the small businesses in our hometowns and neighborhoods. When our public places are as diverse as our great nation, then our country grows stronger and we move closer to the America we dream about”

But what you don’t hear a lot of the No child left behind act is that it gives the military the authority to go to schools and look at student’s academic files. If the school refuses to show the files they we be stripped of federal funds so schools have no choice but hand over the files. Once the military has the files they look for kids who are underachievers and try to recruit them that way.
If this is happening where do people think the military are actually going for the files. They are targeting low poverty schools in the inner city where schools don’t have the necessary materials as the richer of better off schools are. Do you really think they would go to schools in Beverly Hills where they have all the school support such as technology, better books, and access to anything?? Lets face it the military would not target these schools. They go to the poorer neighborhoods where schools don’t have a lot of supplies for the students and students end up getting poor grades. Does this sound like its affirmative action where we are suppose to be equal?? What if there was a draft? Who would be the first to go?? Minorities who live in the poor neighborhoods and where school don’t have a lot of money to spend on things. Do not be fooled that Hillary Clinton is a supporter of affirmative action. She supported the No child left behind Act so she agreed to the military having access to students files.

That's All Folks

The topic for my final paper came to me after a discussion with Professor Tabor. I knew my topic was going to be on the environment but didn't know which aspect of it. After going to the library and seeing another classmates post and searching the candidate's websites, it came to me like a light bulb. I chose do my paper on the candidates position on "green jobs" because it seems as though the whole world is "going green" so it's only right that we "go green" in the job market as well. I wanted to know in what ways were the candidates going to implement those type of jobs into the economy.

The whole blogging experience was ok for me. I'm a very computer literate person and love being on the computer when I have spare time. But it seemed like with the whole blogging thing, my time was going by soooo fast and before I knew it I had to do a post. I'm a very busy person and making time to do the posts was at times hard for me because I didn't have the time. Between a full-time job that starts at 6:00am, a part-time job that starts at 4:00pm and school in the evening, I hardly had time to do my posts. But eventually I got the hang of it and started making time by going to the library after class instead of rushing home to goto sleep or watch tv. Eventhough I enjoyed blogging, I'm still apprehensive about posting my words because I'm just starting to take sociology classes and feel as though everyone else is aware of the field and its theories or ideas and knows how to speak sociologically or critically in their postings. I'm hesistant about my postings because I feel the words won't come out right or sound as intelligent as everyone else's. Blogging forced me to put my words and thoughts out in public to be viewed by others. I like to write but am not yet a critical thinker in terms sociology but eventually after more classes in the field, I know I'll understand the concepts and be able to express my thoughts in terms of sociology.

I really enjoyed the class and topics discussed. Just as other students in the day/night class, this is the first time I actually paid close attention to the presidential race. I voted back in 2004 but didn't really and honestly understand or pay attention to the views of the democratic contenders, I just went with who the minority vote was for. This time around I'm watching debates, reading candidate's websites and understanding their views/ideas.

Thanks Professor Tabor for making the class interesting and not just about writing and also for making the election the focus for some posts and class discussions because it really opened up everyone's eyes to the election and issues at hand, especially those who weren't into politics.

Good Luck to everyone:)
